Barton on Sea
Barton on Sea - Hampshire
Barton on Sea (part of New Milton) is situated at the edge of the New Forest National park and is a lovely little seaside resort.
The beach here is predominantly shingle and the area has suffered from a lot of coastal erosion so the coastal defences have been bolstered by large rock barriers which are complimentary to the make up of the beach area.
The coastal erosion has been a huge problem at Baron on Sea over the years with acres of land (and some grand houses being lost to this encroachment.
The resorts cliff tops area is considered safe so if you fancy a pleasant stroll you have the choice of taking the lower path which will keep the kids happy as they play along the beach.
Or you can walk along the cliff top path which offers some outstanding views of the local scenery including the Needles on the Isle of Wight and Hurst Castle near Lymington on a clear day.
This is one of the closer beaches to the New Forest if you fancy a day trip out of the forest but you also have Barton, Christchurch and Bournemouth not to far away too if you have your own transport.
Barton’s history goes back over 30 million years and the cliffs of the area are a rich source of fossils enabling archaeologists to trace the history back to the days when the area was home to a pre-historic crocodile species.
The geology of Barton on Sea has also yielded a number of Stone Age artefacts proving that the area has been populated since the beginning of human history.
There are not a lot of shops in Barton but it does have a good selection of bed and breakfast accommodation, and a number of cafe's and eating places as well including on right at the top of the cliff next to the large car park.
Barton on Sea would be most suitable for those looking for a more tranquil break or for a nice family day out on the shingle beaches. If you found this page useful please bookmark it for others to share - Thank you
