The New Forests Deer - Deer Viewing in The National Park

There are plenty of animals that live in the New Forest, but none so beautiful and sought after than the New Forest's red deer. The park was originally made as a deer preserve for William the Conqueror, so there have been many species of deer that have lived in the park for 900 years.

Whilst there are many deer that live in the area deer viewing might often be a frustrating topic, as most of them are rather shy and prefer to stay as far out of sight as they can while there are people around. However, the deer are very bold at night, and at dusk, and many people have mentioned that this is the perfect time of day to see Deer in the forest.

There are plenty of varieties of deer that live in the forest. Red deer and Silka deer are two that are often seen, but there are also many fallow deer that live here as well. Fallow deer are actually the most common types of deer that are located in the national park. Roe Deer are also quite common, but the populations of Sika deer and Muntiac deer within the forest are much smaller.

The deer populations mostly stick to the depths of the forest, where they can be sure not to be bothered. However, one can often see them on hiking trails and bike trails as well if you are careful not to disturb the natural sound of the forest.

Although it might be difficult to find deer within the forest, the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary makes this a little bit easier for the public. There is a viewing platform at the sanctuary that overlooks an area where an entire herd of fallow deer regularly congregate. The herd are fed here daily by the keeper, so although its not guaranteed that the deer will be here when you are, there is a fairly good chance that some will be.

These deer are accustomed to human presence, so many of them are happy to gather in the meadow, in plain site of the viewing platform.

The Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary is an area that also contains plenty to do besides watch deer. There are graded walks that will take you through the woods. These walks are either ½ mile, 1 mile, or 2 mile walks, and are easy to take as an entire family or a small group. There is also a picnic area at which you can stop to rest and have a bite.

All of the walks and leave from and return to the picnic area, so there is no worry about getting lost. There is also an information cabin which is manned by a Forest Ranger, in case you would like to have more information on the deer that you have come to see.

The New Forest 's red deer, along with the other species of deer that can be found there, are part of what makes the forest a special living and working area that is always to be cherished.
