East Boldre

East Boldre

East Boldre (close to Lymington), situated in the south west of the national park close to the village of East End originally started life as a squatters settlement around the 1700's.

Not to be confused with the similarly named village of Boldre, East Boldre is nestled between the crown lands and the estates of Beaulieu and Sowley and as such has very little room to grow so it remains true to its heritage as a working Rural community.

Historically though this close proximity to both parishes caused a lot of problems as to which parish was truly responsible for the well being of the squatters of the day and it was not until it became its own parish that the problem diminished.

East Boldre was only given its name as a result of the forming of the parish with the same name. It was up until 1839 called Beaulieu rails because of its proximity to the wooden rails that marked the edge of the great Beaulieu estate.

The location of the village is idyllic as it is in the middle of all the Forest has to offer with open heath land, dense forest and of course all the wildlife and commoners animals that roam the area.

Because of its location the village is not clumped together as you would expect but is quite long in character stretching along the road with quaint New Forest Cottages tucked away beside the roadside.

East Boldre is close to the largest lake in the Park, Hatchett Pond, which is one of the only places in the forest where fishing is allowed. And is an ideal spot to go for a pleasant stroll or stop of for a picnic and sit back and enjoy the tranquillity and songs of the local birdlife which is abundant here.

The village however is quite exposed on one side with such a large area of open heath land so can be a little prone to feeling the effects of the windier weather on occasions.

There are also a few Pubs here if you fancy a quite drink at the end of the day or you fancy a nice meal out.
