New Forest Campsites

New Forest Campsites and Caravan Sites in The New Forest National Park

When camping in the New Forest, you will have plenty of places from which to choose from. These fall into several categories so that families or groups, large or small, will find the perfect place in which to camp. Most of the New Forest campsites have room for tents, caravans and motor homes. However, some of them are caravan and motor home only, with no room to pitch traditional tents.

A few words of advice when camping in the forest, you must find a campsite that is private or Forestry Commission run. Also, you must only have a barbecue at a site that has been designated as a barbecue site. You may not barbecue if the site has not been designated as one that will accept barbecues. This is for the safety of those camping as well as for the safety of the forest itself.

There are several privately run New Forest caravansites and campsites which can be found listed elsewhere on this site or within the forest at the various visitors centres. These privately run campsites usually have more of a holiday park atmosphere, and have excellent facilities. However, these might not be located as deep in the New Forest as you would like.

There are also Forestry Commission campsites within the park. These are campsites that are actually run by the New Forest commission themselves and are located deep within the park.

This means that they will have more access to the park itself. However, the level of the facilities might not be as high in these campsites as in the privately run campsites, so for the perfect New Forest camping experience you might want you to research some sites a little deeper before you go depending on your individual requirements.

Aldridge Hill is one of the New Forest campsites run by the Forestry Commission. It is located a mile from Brockenhurst, in a clearing. This site has no toilet facilities – and has room for 200 pitches. It will accept tents, caravans and motor homes. This is a site where dogs are welcome, and there is a payphone, as well as drinking water.

Ashurst is another New Forest camp site run by the Forestry Commission. It is in a woodland glad, and is a level campsite five minutes away from the railway station. There are no dogs allowed in this campsite, which has room for 280 pitches, and also accepts tents, caravans and motor homes. Here there is hot and cold water, flush toilets, showers, a payphone, a launderette, and also disabled facilities. These are great sites at which to camp in the New Forest.

Denny Wood and Matley Wood situated together in a picturesque woodland setting just a short cycle ride across the forest to nearby Brockenhurst. There is a mixture of camping pitches and caravan and motorhome pitches here, but the site has no facilities. Also due to the forest bye laws this site is not available for dog owners.

Longbeech and Ocknell are two sites that are in the north of the forest. Ocknell is a heath land site, while Longbeech, located nearby, is a beechwood site. There are 480 pitches between the two, and they accept tents, caravans and motor homes.

Longbeech has no toilet facilities, but at Ocknell there is hot and cold water and flush toilets. Both campsites offer spectacular views.

Hollands Wood - Situated in an old oak woodland and just a small stroll from the beautiful village of Brockenhurst the site has good facilities including disabled facilities and if you want to bring your faithful companion on holiday it is also dog friendly. Be aware though the minimum stay is 3 nights for advanced booking which are advisable for this site.

Holmsley is ideally situated in Bransgore on the edge of the New Forest close to both Christchurch and Bournemouth, as well so if its the best of both world you are looking for then this is the site for you.
The site has good facilities (including a launderette and childrens play area) and is also dog friendly. The campsite is large with a capacity of 700 pitches for tents , caravans and motor Homes. Booking in advance is recommended (minimum stay 2 nights).

Roundhill is another campsite that is run by the Forestry commission. It is an open heath land site, with plenty of room. This campsite is located just a short drive from Beaulieu, and has 500 pitches for tents, caravans and motor homes. There is hot and cold water a well as flush toilets. They also have a separate motorcycle field for rallies.

Setthorns which is a smaller site set in stunning open pine and oak woodland. There are no facilities on site but it does cater for tents ,caravans and motorhomes with 235 pitches, and is dog friendly.

Remember, wild camping in the New Forest is illegal to unless you are in a New Forest campsite that is either privately run or run by the Forestry Commission. You may not camp out in the open in the Forest. This is damaging to the environment and also leaves the area prone to forest fires from which can be devastating to both the habitat and the wildlife of the area.

You can book your camping or caravan pitch at the Forest Holidays website which is a joint venture between the Forestry Commission and the Camping and Caravanning club.
